“The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants—things which must shortly take place. And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John, who bore witness to the word of God, and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, to all things that he saw. Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near.”
The things which must shortly take place are found in God. The future of my life in the destiny of humanity and the earth is found in the Revelation of Jesus. When we gaze upon Jesus, we are peering into eternity; though in this life it is like we are looking into a mirror dimly. In Jesus is our future and our past; in Him we see our brokenness crucified with Him on the cross and our redemption in His resurrection. Like all great stories, we are all anticipating the final chapter of this age which is the final consumation of God’s redemptive covenant with mankind. Humanity had it’s beginning with God and will close out this age with God. Therefore the vision that John receives is the revelation of Jesus Christ. In this book we see Jesus’ beauty put on display as he leads His Church into victory.
Every generation has been building upon one another. Like a marathon, the church has been passing the baton through history. As the wheat is growing up with the tares; we are all moving towards that day when sin and righteousness comes to full maturity. The generation alive on that day is talked about in the Bible more than any other. There will be unique dynamics unfolding on the earth, both good and bad, that will be happening and the Lord wants that generation ready. This is why Jesus commands repeatedly to be watchful and to recognize the timeframe of the generation that we are living in. No wonder this is the only book in the Bible to have a special blessing attatched to it; to know the prophecy, to live out the prophecy, and to proclaim the prophecy. For every generation there is blessing in discovering the knowledge of Jesus in this book, to be emboldened to stand firm in righteousness through the pressures of life, and to share in the joy of passing on living understanding to the next generation. For the generation at the end of the age this prophecy will be critical to know and understand. There will be much joy and comfort in knowing the sure victory of Jesus and the saints, as well as understanding His heart and purpose in the midst of the events taking place on the earth. And by far the greatest blessing will be evident on that glorious and terrifying day of judgement. At the judgement seat of Christ all men will be held accountable to their lives on earth. To those who refused Jesus’ mercy and were unrepentant, they will be judged by their deeds and cast into the lake of fire for eternity; and to those who put their faith in Jesus, they will be rewarded according to their obedience to God’s Word in varying degrees of glory. How we choose to respond to this book today will impact our eternal glory in the age to come.
