Anticipating a Change of Season (Song of Songs 2:9)

My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag.
Behold, he stands behind our wall;
He is looking through the windows,
Gazing through the lattice.

The Shulamite sees her beloved leaping and skipping over the mountains and the hills. She likens Him to a gazelle or young stag; this expresses moving with grace and strength. Previously she was in a season of rest under the apple tree. She was cozy and comfortable; shut in with God. Now the Shulamite sees her beloved standing outside and looking through the window with a beckoning gaze.

The season is changing and I could not stop it, even if I wanted to. Many times, I have found myself here, where I have gotten comfortable in my rhythms of life. Then I see Jesus in a fresh way; in a way that is adventurous and risky. Even before He says a word; His gaze breaks through my resistance and beckons to me. I am filled with anticipation and fear at the same time. I know He is about to speak and my life changes every time He does. I know He is good, but all my insecurities and fears, that He beckons to conquer, come to the surface. I hold my breath; waiting for His word.

“Aslan is a lion- the Lion, the great Lion.” “Ooh” said Susan. “I’d thought he was a man. Is he-quite safe? I shall feel rather nervous about meeting a lion”…”Safe?” said Mr Beaver …”Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.”
