Being Present with God

Immanuel, God with us.

God is present with you in every moment. You always have His attention. He is never asleep or off somewhere else, though He is everywhere, behind and before you.

He is closer to you than a brother. He is closer than even your own skin. His Spirit is within and all around you. Everything that you experience, God experiences with you.

Every moment is intimate.

When you are on a walk and your hand touches a leaf hanging low from a tree; you can feel its texture, smell the leafy green plant smell, and may even feel a peaceful emotion as you focus on the stillness of nature. In this experience, you are not alone. Only God and yourself, in that moment, are having the exact same shared experience; from the physical touch to the depth of emotion.

To be present with self is to be present with God.

The past is gone and the future is fantasy. All we have and all that is real, is the present. We grow from our history and move forward into our destiny, but we live in the now.

So often we get hung up on past failures. We can trust that God has forgiven what we have confessed. We also worry about tomorrow, though Jesus commands us not to. We can trust God with our future.

To be aware of our present moment is to be aware of God, because God is present.

Being present is a daily practice.

Throughout your day, every day, take time to be present. Throughout your busy schedules, take a few moments and answers these questions.

What do you see around you? What do you hear? What do you smell? What does your physical body feel? What emotions do you feel?

Acknowledge that God is with you. Say “thank you for being with me.”

You will be amazed at how this simple practice will make you more available to hear God throughout your day. There will come an ease, like that of being with a friend, ready to listen and ready to talk at any moment.

Prayer is abiding with God.

Prayer is awareness of God’s nearness. This is what it is to pray without ceasing. It does not require a constant intense focus, that would be impossible and exhausting. Prayer is many things, as time with loved ones is many things. Prayer is simply being present with God.
